We've been enjoying hearing all about the Rev Richard Cole's new book recently, and felt inclined to share his insights, adding a few thoughts of our own too. Richard seems to be able to connect with many people, across varied interests and all walks of life. He carries a special place in our hearts personally - as a family friend he gave the eulogy at my Mother's funeral - with his warm words and gentle support.
When grief strikes, it can be so hard to find a way out. After a loved one has passed on, often those left behind can find themselves stuck in ‘waves of sadness' that can hit at any time. There is never a right or wrong way of coping with bereavement and grief, but there are definitely some things that can help.
The former Communards star and famous vicar, the Reverend Richard Coles expresses this well, detailing how he came/is still coming to terms with the loss of his partner from addiction in his latest book. It is so refreshing to see such an influential figure speak about grief which is often hard to speak about in such an honest and candid way.
Ultimately, when it comes to loss and grief, there is no correct way to approach it. Some days may be harder than others, whilst a feeling of guilt may arise for forgetting about your loss and enjoying life for a few moments whilst in a period of mourning.
However, the only way to ‘do’ grief correctly is to ensure that you never let your loved one's memory and legacy be forgotten. Remembering your nearest and dearest is the best way to keep them alive in your heart, and the best way to come to terms with their passing on. Like Rev. Richard says, "one of the really tough things about when someone dies is that they take a future with them". This is why it is so important that you are able to carry them with you forever in your heart and future by remembering them and treasuring the memories you shared together.
